Michael Houghton

11/14/05 - As I've written in several other "news" spots on this here website, I am now fully out of debt. Anyone who asks me "so, you wanna start another magazine now?" will likely be punched squarely in the throat. Or at least will receive a wilting glare.

I've been keeping myself pretty busy lately with a big list of new-ish creative endeavors, and some of them are actually starting to pay off now.

First off, the big news is that I'm doing the album art for Love Equals Death, (the band featuring ex-members of Tsunami Bomb, Loose Change, and 26 MPH) on Fat Wreck Chords. And I'm actually getting paid for it (sound of jaw dropping). I'll make sure to post an update here when the album comes out. I'll jinx it no further than that.

I also just designed the logo for the band St. Peterbilt, featuring members of Cropduster and The Feud.

Secondly, I finished the two music videos I did last year, and you can see one on the love equals death website at www.loveequalsdeath.com and the other, for Life in Braille, on my own completely undeveloped portfolio site www.explodingfistofdeath.com. Yes, that's right. Exploding Fist of Death. Thought you'd like that.

The thing I'm enjoying the most is that I am finally learning to record music and have started recording some of the vast back catalog of my own songs. Okay, so the portion of it that is actually good may not be that vast, but I've now recorded fairly rough versions of three of them. Just finished one last night. And it features me playing guitar, singing, and playing one of the melodicas I purchased for just this reason. When I finish those, I'll post something here and direct you to Exploding Fist of Death, where I'll be housing them.

It's not up yet, but I'm in the process of redesigning the Designed By Monkeys, my online t-shirt company that I'm doing with two other fellas (listed below). We're going to be turning it into a site for bands to sell their shirts through, and we'll do all the shipping and printing and such. Haven't worked out all the details yet, so I'll be posting more information on that here later.

And I've been doing a lot of biking (from Sebastopol to Santa Rosa for work two or three days a week, at least until it started raining this year) and skim boarding every Friday, because I definitely need to learn about this "having fun" concept that you humans keep telling me about.

Oh, and I guess I should note that I beat "Doom 3", and instead now have Tivo to keep me enslaved. Is it irrational that I feel anxiety about falling so desperately behind on my Tivo viewing? I'm pretty sure Tivo was supposed to alleviate anxiety, not become a new source for it. Oh well.

I'll do my best to keep you updated this time. Peace out, homies. (was my vernacular convincing? Hmm, probably not).

9/28/04 - Michael Houghton has decided that if he does everything he used to do for the magazine as separate creative endeavors, he will be considered a Renaissance Man (intelligent readers will likely figure out he wrote this bio himself). Aw, nevermind. I'll just write this in the first person. In order to acheive this status of Renaissance Man, I am doing the following:

  • Designing and Marketing T-Shirts - Kevin Jamieson, Ryan Whittenburg, and I have started Designed By Monkeys, a t-shirt company with all original designs. From now until election day they are donating a percentage of every politically themed shirt to MoveOnPAC.org to help mobilize voters and insure that voting practices are fair. Check us out at www.designedbymonkeys.com
  • Writing and Filming an Indie Movie - I've joined up with Darwin Meiners and Jeremy Moore for the Trick Knee Productions film "Fairfield, Idaho". I am co-writing and will later be helping produce, direct, and edit the movie. I am also working on storyboarding and filming a few short film projects as practice, and will soon be filming music videos for several friends' bands. All progress on those fronts can be viewed at www.tkpsite.com and I'll detail them here too. Check out the trailer for Fairfield, Idaho" as well as the short film-class production of "Kung Fu", which will soon be retitled "Exploding Fist of Death, Episode I".
  • Writing for the Bohemian - It's weird to actually get PAID for writing, but kinda rad. I've written a bunch of DVD reviews that don't appear in the online archives, unfortunately. But I've also done interviews with Patrick Amiot (Sebastopol Artist), and The Mama Collective, as well as book reviews of How Soon is Never?, and more that aren't online. Sometime I'll get all my writing up online for the world to see...
  • Illustration and Design - It's all my fault: I drew the illustration on the cover of The Raped's "Every Girl is a God Damn Whore" 7". You can't really see how disturbing it is on their website though, because the graphic is too tiny, which is a bummer. I'll put up a portfolio soon, promise. In the meantime, if you're in a band and you need layout, contact me. I'm cheap.
  • Writing and Eventually Recording My Own Music - Not much to show the world, but I've been writing a lot of music lately, and strumming away at the old acoustic guitar. I've also been collecting weird old instruments to prepare to be the next Neutral Milk Hotel. I have three melodicas, several low-grade 80's toy keyboards, a 1967 Vox Continental Electric Organ (which needs repair), a Reed Organ (which also needs repair), and several strange little whistles.
  • Going to the Gym a LOT - Running a magazine doesn't make you particularly healthy. That's where the gym comes in. I've decided his goal is to get HELLA ripped and make fun of skinny Emo boys. If you want me to really like you, and you run into me in public, tell me I look like I've lost a bunch of weight. Because I have.
  • Learning to Relax - Running a magazine also has a tendency to destroy your sanity. I'm slowly getting it back.
  • Working to Make the Debt go Away - The magazine accrued a huge debt. After the bankruptcy, I decided to pay back the people who were good to the magazine (despite no longer being legally bound to), as well as any of the staff still owed money. That, and the back taxes, totalled somewhere in the range of $20,000. I have been plugging away at my Architectural CAD Drafting job, but it takes a while. Please feel free to donate to help me out of debt. Even a couple of bucks would help.
